I work with people living with mental illness and or traumatic brain injuries who want to be accepted and included. They have wonderful spirits and are kind and generous. Communication is difficult and when aphasia is included, often their words, their tone, and or their manner of communication prevents them from getting what they need, ie understanding, acceptance and inclusion. So while I can understand your view of the lyrics, I see them very differently. Those of my patients that I share this song with identify with Darcy and am glad that I can see beyond the flames to see their true selves.

Thank you for your comment, and I'm thrilled there others out there who know and remember this song. As with any art, I think the key is to consider the context of the time it was created. 1978 was a much more innocent, and different time, which makes it easier for me to enjoy this delightful song from my childhood. Cheers!

YES!!! My older brother just sent this message. “When the individual gives up the very thing that makes them unique in order to participate in capitalism, we celebrate!
Why didn’t he just MAKE his friends presents?”

This brought me to think about the lyrics as well and what a disappointment.

Your piece cracked me up and echoed what my sister, brother, and I - all in our 50’s - feel about this cherished childhood song… now with a different, albeit depressing, tone. Thank you for the laughter as we mourn our innocent take on a favorite! (You are not alone. ?)

Yes, Thank you for the writing. I also worked for Valente's back in 1997/98.
I was their pizza maker then and enjoyed the friendly atmosphere. I worked as much as I could, mainly nights, and it was my second job then. I worked for another family restaurant on 44th, Wadsworth, during the day and at Valente's at night.
I remember Scott. Being from Jersey, I was a die-hard Springsteen fan. The Boss was touring that year, and the Broncos got knocked out of their Superbowl chances by the Jaguars.
I made a lot of pizzas during their Happy Hour and more so during the Bronco games. The waitress had to run up and down the stairs every time they were low on pies. I worked for two chefs, and I remember Madeline, too. Jada, Ray Jr.'s daughter, would work the drive-thru at times. I also remember a young hostess who had worn a lovely blouse she had received as a gift from her stepmother, and unfortunately. At the same time, in the back of the house, she bumped into someone carrying cooking oil, which went all over the front of her blouse. She was so upset that I offered her a new one because the blouse was destroyed. I believe things worked out for her.
I have a daily remembrance because I had burned myself bumping into the pizza oven door. That scar is still visible today. Stuff happens...lol. Thanks for the memories, and if Scott is still out there. The Boss is still touring. "The Ghost of Tom Joad".

You are amazingly talented. The company were fools to let you go. You will be a huge asset to whomever hires you. Job hunting sucks. Last year I was let go from my job of fifteen years. Job hunting at 60 years old was daunting and depressing. Keep that beautiful head of yours up. You are brilliant. Somebody hire this woman STAT!!!

Thank you for this, I am finding it many years after being written but you captured it they way it was meant to be told. I worked nights bussing tables, loved watching the pasta machine in back with all the different heads and cutter timings. I eventually started working the OG's table at lunch time as the busser. I loved that job, the people, the stories. So much history! I think it was around the time they closed my moms pre-wedding dinner was held there. Pietras, Valentes and Marcs were always a part of my families lives even though we were Irish, there was quality in the recipes and care taken to respect the tradition of those recipes, along with a great group of people who loved what they did. I will never forget those experiences and still tell tales from those days.
