Today, Wednesday’s words are all about Mother Earth. 🙂

The world is finite, resources are scarce,
Things are bad and will be worse,
Coal is burned and gas exploded,
Forests out and soil eroded,
Wells are dry and air polluted,
Dust is blowing, trees uprooted,
Oil is going, ores depleted,
Drains receive what is excreted,
Land is sinking, seas are rising,
Man is far too enterprising,
Fires will rage with man to fan it,
Soon we will have a plundered planet.
– K. E Boulding

Future

Sweet Mother Earth, lovely daughter of Ra
wonderful cosmic creation you are
spinning through aeons evolving and shaping
dying from twenty short decades of raping
now you are burning, in sadness you smolder
heat slowly rising yet future looks colder
Soon all your children will hurt you no more
mankind raps loudly on grim reaper’s door
dragged to its future as convicts in chains
rivers and streams clogged like varicose veins.

Thank God men cannot fly, and lay waste the sky as well as the earth. ~Henry David Thoreau

Forests and fields turn to debris and dust
greed and abandonment violates trust
dig, rip and kill is the cry of the age
teardrops are falling on history’s page
written in blood from the animals lost
profits are rising, so discount the cost.

Rush through their lives as the air above burns
see daily damage, yet nobody learns
meek is the voice from humanity’s cry
too busy gathering trinkets to try.

Slowly your body turns barren and bare
the future is written – there isn’t one there.

– Graeme King

Happy Earth Day. Let’s try and take care of Mother Earth.

Only a 5-year old (soon to be 6-year old) could come up with this cute little poem The Moon is a Cookie. Next thing you know, he'll want to blog. :P

I know, there are a lot of bloggers out there who do a “Wordless Wednesday” post. Call me a rebel. I’m reversing the trend and going with “Wednesday’s Words.” 😛

Today’s words were penned by none other than The Goose (aka, Zachary). We were all sitting at dinner some time back, talking about stories and the writing he was doing in school when out of the blue, he makes up this poem, The Moon is a Cookie.

Enjoy!

The Moon is a Cookie

The moon is a cookie;
The moon is a flower;
The moon is a rose, that blossoms at night.
The moon is a sliver that slips through the treetops,
and crosses the ribbons of slivers of light.

Poem by Zachary. Punctuation by me. 😉

Gentleman Jim.

Gentleman Jim Reeves was perhaps the biggest male star to emerge from the Nashville sound. His mellow baritone voice and muted velvet orchestration combined to create a sound that echoed around his world and has lasted to this day.

One of my favorites is Blue Side of Lonesome:

I was driving to meet some friends last night. As usual, my iPod was set to shuffle and it was treating me quite well. Then out of nowhere came a song that, better than any Back-to-the-Future DeLorean, sent me right back in time. I’m guessing that most of my readers have never even heard of him, but way back in the day he was the epitome of the Gentleman. Gentleman Jim.

I grew up listening to Jim Reeves, among others. That’s not to say that my mom liked country music. In fact, I think she actually dislikes it a great deal. Gentleman Jim, however, is an exception. One thing my mother likes is a good lyric. She’s the most sentimental, sappy, wussy person I know. Which is exactly where I get it from. Of all the things I did get from her, the love of a good song (lyric-wise, anyway) is one of those things. Most country music attempts a good story–most country music gets it wrong.

Of course, like Gentleman Jim, there are exceptions. Where am I going with this? I’m going to the Blue Side of Lonesome. A sappy, sad, brilliant play on love songs and the broken-hearted. That’s way Blue Side of Lonesome is the first in my own, new, blog category: Wednesday’s Words:

Blue Side of Lonesome

I’m Calling To Tell You It’s Over
Yes Darling You’re Now Free To Go
You’re Saying You’re Sorry You Hurt Me
But You Hurt Me Much More Than You Know

You’re Asking Me Where This Call Comes From
Oh I Hope That You Won’t End Up Here
If Your New Romance Turns Out A Failure
Here’s Where To Find Me My Dear

I’m Just On The Blue Side Of Lonesome
Right Next To The Heartbreak Hotel
In A Tavern That’s Known As Three Tear Drops
On A Bar Stool Not Doin’ So Well

The Floor Has A Carpet Of Sorrow
But No One Can Weep In The Aisle
And They Say Someone Broke The Bar Mirror
With Only The Ghost Of A Smile

The Hands On The Clock Never Alter
For Things Never Change In This Place
There’s No Present, No Past, No Future
We’re The Ones Who Have Lost In Love’s Race

I’m Just On The Blue Side Of Lonesome
Right Next To The Heartbreak Hotel
In A Tavern That’s Known As Three Tear Drops
On A Bar Stool Not Doin’ So Well

Sappy and sad, I know. Take a listen to the delivery. He was truly a Gentleman.
