For those of you who don’t already know, I’ve been trying to lose weight. Thanks to Ivonne I’ve lost 35 pounds since May. That’s the good news. The bad news is I have 30 pounds to go. I’ve been off the medication that Ivonne prescribed me since October and thankfully I have not gained any weight back. In fact, I’m quite often annoyed that I have to keep stopping to pull my pants up whenever I walk anywhere. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice problem to have. 🙂

What I have to be careful of, especially in times of stress, is falling back into old (bad) habits. The month of December has been up and down like only the holiday season can be. I’ve found myself not once, but twice, grabbing my all-time favorite comfort lunch—Stouffer’s macaroni and cheese and a Pepsi. The first time was when I had to run to the store for Jonah’s lunch. I didn’t even realize I was reaching into the cooler until it was too late. That lunch was so yummy I found myself stopping at the store again two days later, this time with no other excuse.

I need an intervention! Okay, not really. Falling off the wagon twice since May doesn’t have me reaching for the diet pills again, but I do need to quit eating macaroni and cheese just because I have a few million things going on. There are better ways to deal with stress. It’s been so beautiful here, maybe I should get my ass on those fancy rollerblades that are acting as planters right now.

How about you, my not-so-many fans, what food(s) do you run to when the going gets tough?

  1. Hi Betty 🙂 I’ve been on a diet for about a week and a half and have lost 5.5lbs – which is pretty good considering I’m not starving myself. In fact, I feel like I eat too much still sometimes.

Its not quite an atkins diet because I do still eat carbs but I have replaced a lot of the carbs I eat later in the day with vegetables. I hardly find myself stressed (because I don’t really care about my job) so I can’t relate at the moment to reaching for comfort foods but I have certainly done that in the past (though its been more of a comfort *drink* for me).

When I used to get really stressed, I took up smoking. This was also the time when I was living on a diet of banquet food, caffeine and 3 hrs/day of sleep. I was at my ideal weight then… but I also used to run around and lift cases of beer, tables and stacks of chairs for a living. Go figure!

    • I know what you mean about banquet food, caffeine and 3/hrs of sleep. Back in the day when I was bartending and waiting tables I didn’t gain weight at all.

      Damn desk jockey jobs!

  2. I hear you, I have lost 60 pounds in about 2 years, and now find myself inching about 4 pounds back due to holidays and starting to eat more than I should. It is something I fight with, I am almost always hungry and have to fight the urge to eat the stuff I want constantly.

    • 60 pounds? That’s awesome! Don’t let a few pounds over the holidays upset you. It sounds like you know what to do to lose it when the new year begins.

  3. December is traditionally a write-off for me because I have SUCH a sweet tooth. I pretty much just resign myself to having to work like hell to ditch the extra 10 lbs in January. *shrug* I consider it worth it to enjoy the season the way I want to.

The rest of the time though, I try to avoid the sweet stuff.

    • I’m not a fan of sweets to begin with. It’s cheese, salt and carbs I crave. I’ve already given away all of my “super fat” clothes so I can’t go back.

Now I just need to lose enough weight to get rid of the “fat” clothes. 😛

  4. Yea guys, she gave away all the fat clothes to me, her Mom,. but I’ve given them all to the homeless because I lost 40#s in 4 months and now they don’t even fit me! So it’s all for a good cause.
