Polar Bears--headed for extinction?
Polar Bears--headed for extinction?
Wednesday night I was up late. The TV was on for background noise while I was reading (I like to multitask). That really annoying celebrity show “Extra!” with the stupid “Extra, Extra!” chant came on. Being too lazy to move the dog, grab the remote and change the channel, I had no choice but to watch. One of the lead stories was an interview with Matt Damon, where he made some intriguing (and might I say, ASTUTE) observations about John McCain’s decision to choose Sarah Palin as his running mate:

Of course, Matt Damon aside, just the fact that she’s a Republican and McCain’s running mate means there’s no way in he-l-l that I’ll vote for her. In the interest of fairness, however, here are some of her opinions regarding major political issues, and my opinion on her opinion πŸ™‚ :

Opposes explicit sex-education programs. (Jul 2006)

Let parents opt out of schoolbooks they find offensive. (Jul 2006)
Parents know best, about school spending & school age. (Jul 2006)

Environment:
Opposed protections for salmon from mining contamination. (Aug 2008)
Sue US government to stop listing polar bear as endangered. (Aug 2008)
We must encourage timber, mining, drilling, & fishing. (Jan 2008)
Feds shouldn’t list beluga whales as endangered. (Aug 2007)

Energy & Oil:
Claimed major triumph: $500 million subsidy for gas pipeline. (Aug 2008)
Global warming affects Alaska, but is not man-made. (Aug 2008)
Lift moratorium on offshore drilling. (Jul 2008)

Abortion:
Rejected sympathy for Down’s Syndrome son, as gift from God. (Aug 2008)
Choose life, even if her own daughter were raped. (Nov 2006)
Only exception for abortion is if mother’s life would end. (Jul 2006)

Gun Control:
Supports ending D.C.’s 32-year-old ban on handguns. (Jun 2008)
Lifelong NRA member & champion of right to bear arms. (Feb 2008)
Supports Constitutional right to bear arms. (Nov 2006)

Crime:
Maximum sentence for first-degree murder by police. (Apr 2007)
If legislature passed death penalty law, I would sign it. (Nov 2006)
Death penalty for adults who murder children. (Oct 2006)

Drugs:
Opposes legalizing marijuana, but meth is greater threat. (Aug 2006)
Smoked marijuana when it was legal under Alaska law. (Aug 2006)
Top priorities include gangs & drugs; they harm family life. (Jul 2006)

Budget & the Economy:
Control spending by request if possible; by veto if needed. (Sep 2008)
$7 billion savings plan for education & transportation. (Dec 2007)
Firm believer in free market capitalism. (Nov 2006)

I’m surprised at how evenly my ups and downs are matched. I could employ a rating system of some kind, where my priorities are weighted–this would definitely be more accurate. The issues are listed by my priority, however, some items would be weighted heavier than others.

I still think Matt Damon is right. President Palin. Are you kidding me?

  1. You’re Granpa was an NRA member, AND a gunsmith. I am still of the belief that

‘when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.” Gun laws only affect responsible citizens who buy and use their guns Leagally. The guns killing people in this country aren’t, as a rule, legal registered, or owned by people who give a sh** about the law, so all the laws in the world won’t fix that. What gun laws will do is take away every citizens right to protect themselves against the as*****s running around out there with guns.

Other than that, I agree with you.

Well, maybe a little hesitant on the “if her own daughter were raped.” thing. That child would make the lives of a couple waiting, in some cases years to adopt, a joy. The act was heinous, not the child that act created. Of course, always mitigating circumstances, so hard call on that one. Unless the possible death involves a grown person, and even then, affects a child, who by the way, has NO say as to whether it’s life will be ended, I am just flat against abortion.

  2. How odd that we would disagree. πŸ™‚

I bet the statistics on the number of guns that have been taken from the “legal registered, or owned by people who give a sh** about the law” people are pretty high. The ass****s have to get their guns from somewhere and I’m guessing they didn’t just go to Wal-Mart.

As for abortion, while that would never be a choice for me, I sill have an unalienable right to CHOOSE. β€œWhat is freedom? Freedom is the right to choose: the right to create for oneself the alternatives of choice.” ~Archibald MacLeish

  3. I think there are some very important things that Matt Damon leaves out. We know the truth about the dinosaurs, it’s a false accusation, pulled off of a blog ironically… She did not impose a ban on books, she threatened to, and even informed a librarian that she (the librarian) was going to be fired… The polars Bears and Beluga whales issue is bad, her view that Global Warming is “not man made or affected…” is extremely disheartening! If you watch the interviewd with Charles Gibson, she stumbles on things like the Bush Doctrine (should not necessarily be known to the averagee Joe, should be known by a person on the doorstep of the most influential position in the country, perhaps the world…

“Out of the National Security Stategy, four main points are highlighted as the core to the Bush Doctrine: Preemption, Military Primacy, New Multilateralism, and the Spread of Democracy.[15] The document emphasized pre-emption by stating: “America is now threatened less by conquering states than we are by failing ones. We are menaced less by fleets and armies than by catastrophic technologies in the hands of the embittered few.” and required “defending the United States, the American people, and our interests at home and abroad by identifying and destroying the threat before it reaches our borders.”[16]” – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bush_Doctrine

Those are far more interesting, her position as a reformer, when she as Governor of Alaska requested more per capita Earmark spending than any other state in the country! Why do they continuosly use the Bridge to Nowhere ploy when it has already been debunked! It is openly known that she supported the Bridge to Nowhere before it got laughed out of the White House… We need these candidates to focus on the issues and truth, as opposed to this constant rehash of the speech from “Citizen Kane”, all sorts of promises they’d tell us, “if they weren’t to busy arranging to keep them…”

Sarah Palin’s gender isn’t the impacter, John McCains tme in the torture isn’t the impacter, Barack Obama’s ethnicity isn’t going to be the impacter… We are the impacter, I have never seen more commercials launched by the people than I have this year! That is what makes Sarah Palin so great… she got everyones focus off of the issues. I listened to both speeches, I am registered INDEPENDENT, and I am not saying that I heard a FULL PLAN from Barack Obama, but I heard something resembling a plan. I don’t expect someone to address every problem in the country I heard McCain talk about how he was going to directly defy votes cast by the PEOPLE against drilling, McCain is going to clean up the mess his party has been largely making, through scandals, earmark spending, and abuse of power. I agree, that should be done, and maybe John McCain should be amosngst the group that does that reforming, but not from the seat of the President! I would rather see John McCain lose an election, than see me lose my country! I am happy to debate this with all, but bring me something real, I have seen the rhetoric already, I don’t want to see anymore. I can also offer clips from Baracks speech, or you can go to http://www.barackobama.com/issues/ to read the plan that everyone claims he doesn’t have!

One of the more deplorable of the McCain policies on his sloutions site is as several analysts say that it isn’t even possible, and tragic if it happens…:
“GOVERNMENT SPENDING: John McCain Proposes A One-Year Spending Pause To Evaluate Programs. He believes that outside of essential military and veterans programs there should be a one-year discretionary spending pause that should be used for a top-to-bottom review of the effectiveness of federal programs.”

  4. Well, I guess I agree with you on the “right to choose” thing. But if we have “the right” to end a life, why should be be denied the right to a means to “save” our own? I adhere to the “unalienable right” to bear arms, and will, until the day someone shoots me! Tee-hee.

As for the comments by “my son”, “Duh, someday I are gonna be as smart as my kids!” You go Matt! I have seen, and read, and heard, less intelligent statements from people who are paid millions to give us those very statements! Kudos! Why the hell are you working at an elextronics store again? Why the hell aren’t you out there somewhere telling us all of these things? Oh wait, I guess you just did! Again, well done.

  5. I generally try to avoid airing my political views in the blogosphere, but Ms. Palin’s sudden appearance in world politics is a frightening prospect …

  6. I agree…I generally try to keep my posts on the lighter side. This election year, however, I’m feeling the need to express my thoughts. Even if people don’t agree with me, maybe they’ll be provoked into action. Vote, at the very least! πŸ™‚

Aren’t you glad you are in Portugal?

  8. I have friends moving to ECUADOR for this very reason! i’m cetainly begining to understand the compulsion!!

Maybe just a bit further North, eh?

PS…LOVEthe “Those who ignore history…” button!

  9. Is it me or is it weird that she is for “Death penalty for adults who murder children.” And she would sign for the Death Penalty. Yet, she is pro-life? Am I misunderstanding the definition of Pro-Life? Just interesting.

  10. Agreed. She can’t seem to make up her mind. Just like the exhausted “Bridge to Nowhere.” She’s for. She’s against. Hmmm….I guess it depends on which way the political wind blows.
